Today there are 25 member states in the EU, each with its own cultures and languages. Overall in the Union there are around 50 languages with more than 30 000 speakers - truly a cultural and linguistic treasure! Some of the current problems of the EU, however, relate to language issues. For example, for the majority of EU citizens, there is a lack of an effective means for international communication, although vast sums are dedicated to language learning. Another example is the multi-faceted inequality among the official languages of the EU. This section of the Nitobe Centre deals with these issues and aims to provide information and encourage new thinking.
